Orthopaedics

Balmain Sports Medicine has a team of three orthopaedic surgeons with extensive experience and a special interest in sports injuries. Each of the surgeons provide a comprehensive orthopaedic service for all conditions within their speciality (ie, shoulder, wrist, knee and ankle), to develop a treatment plan that is tailored for each individual athlete's needs.

The primary aim of our orthopaedic surgeons is to deliver an efficient, high quality orthopaedic service to our patients, which involves liaising with our referring doctors (GPs, sports physicians, other orthopaedic surgeons) and associated allied health physiotherapists to manage the your injury and the rehabilitation (if surgery is required).

A referral from your general practitioner (GP) is required to see one of our orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr David Broe (Hip and Knee)

Dr David Broe is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises predominantly in hip and knee surgery, managing all aspects of the hip / knee pathology, including sports injuries and degenerative disease.

Graduating with First class honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), David completed his surgical training in Dublin and attained his Orthopaedic fellowship (FRACS) in  Sydney in 2010. David then travelled extensively throughout Europe to gain further expertise and training with recognised world leaders in the field of hip and knee surgery. He has a genuine interest in clinical research and has a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals, as well as ongoing research projects. David is actively involved in teaching through his appointment at the University of New South Wales medical program and is also an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons surgical trainees and participates in the Orthopaedic Outreach program to the Solomon Islands with Dr Michael Solomon.

Dr Jeff Ling (Ankle and Foot)

Dr Jeff Ling is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in all conditions of the ankle and foot, including both adults and paediatrics. He is appointed at Prince of Wales and Sydney Children's Hospitals, and operates at Prince of Wales Private hopsital. After graduating from the University of New South Wales, he completed his basic surgical training at Royal North Shore, and subsequently obtained his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2011. He then undertook further subspecialty training in the USA where he was a clinical fellow at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, which is ranked the top hospital for orthopaedics in the USA. This was followed by a paediatric fellowship at the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Jeff has a special interest in sports injuries of the foot and ankle and has been involved in the treatment of both recreational, as well as elite athletes from Super Rugby, the New York Knicks, the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Ballet.

Dr John Trantalis (Shoulder and Elbow)

Dr John Trantalis is an orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery, managing traumatic and chronic shoulder and elbow disorders.

Trained in New South Wales with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association, John completed his Fellowship at the University of Calgary, Canada and The Prince of Wales hospital. Gaining further training at the Mayo Clinic and Sloane Kettering Centre (New York), John has a strong interest in clinical research with several publications in peer-reviewed journals and is currently completing a Diploma in Public Health. John is actively involved in teaching through his appointment at Concord Public Hospital and is an active member in the Orthopaedic Outreach program.

Dr Bernard Schick (Wrist and Hand)

Dr Bernard Schick specialises in hand and wrist surgery who specialises in bone and soft tissue trauma to the hand, particularly complex wrist fractures and reconstructive hand surgery including wrist arthroscopy.

After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1996, Bernard trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Sydney, gaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010. While completing his training he also completed post graduate studies in Sports Medicine at UNSW and is enthusiastically involved in medical student and junior Doctor teaching. Since 2010 he has worked as a VMO Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in Hand Surgery at Prince of Wales and Sydney Hospitals and completed a Hand Surgery specialist fellowship at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
